Always use mechanical handling methods instead of manual handling if possible e.g. wheelbarrow to carry straw bale.

Know your capabilities; take care near the pigs.

• Can you handle the load yourself do you need assistance?

​​

• Is there a clear walkway with good lighting to the work area?

Checks that should be carried out before removing the old straw:

​

• Make sure the pigs are out of the Ark and away from the area feeding

​

• Wear gloves to protect against cuts and punctures

​

• Wear safety boots or shoes to protect your feet

​

• Carry out a trial lift by rocking the load from side to side then try lifting it a small amount to get a ‘feel’ for it.​

By doing so we hope to be able to

​

• Reduce the Number of accidents and incidents on site

​

• Make sure the Pigs are kept busy

​

• Don’t enter the Pig Ark if the Pigs are around it

​

• Gently spread the straw the Pigs will do the rest

SGTT20 - moving & weighing pigs

Always use mechanical handling methods instead of manual handling if possible e.g. forklift to carry and where possible position weighing machine.

​

Know your capabilities; take care near the pigs.

​

• This must be carried out by a minimum of two persons

​

Checks that should be carried out before moving and weighing the pigs:

​

• Make sure the pigs are out of the Ark and away from the area feeding

​​

• Wear gloves to protect against cuts and punctures

​​

• Wear safety boots or shoes to protect your feet

​​

• Ensure the gate to the pen is secure and working well

​​

• Make sure you have enough protein feed on hand to keep them busy and quiet

​​

• Always wash or use the disinfectant to clean your hands after working with the pigs​
